Sheriff Derek Osborne - Founder

The Sheriff Osborne Hero Foundation, Inc. is a charitable organization dedicated to supporting the well-being of first responders in Tompkins County. The Foundation is led by a board of professionals with many having strong ties to first responders. We are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, meaning that contributions made to the foundation are tax-deductible.

Our Mission:

The Foundation's goal is to enhance the working environment and well-being of first responders. Due to financial constraints within the county’s financial policies, many necessary items and benefits that could improve the morale and health of staff are left unaddressed, such as providing basic amenities like briefing room refrigerators and microwaves, covering incentives for staff working long hours during staffing shortages, and funding recognition events. Until now, the Sheriff and Undersheriff expended personal funds to cover such things. We seek to step in and address these gaps through private donations to provide a better working environment and honor the dedication of those serving in high-stress, 24/7 roles.

Our Vision:

With support from the community, we hope to expand beyond the Sheriff’s office to assist all first-responder agencies in Tompkins County and grow to support much larger initiatives that will better honor those who serve.

What We Do:

  • Provide funding for the items and services that improve the well-being of first responders, such as break room supplies, work incentives, retirement gifts, and meals during lengthy investigations. That's just a start!

  • Support initiatives that help foster an environment of honor, pride, and integrity for first responders.

Why We Do It:

Through donations, we aim to create a supportive, motivating environment for first responders and ensure they have the resources needed to remain well and serve the community effectively. Simply put, we want Tompkins County first responders to be the most supported around!

What We Don’t Do:

  • The foundation does not engage in political activities, to include contributing to political campaigns, campaigning for or speaking out against politicians, or support or fight legislation.

  • We do not provide funds for legal defense or support legal suits.

  • We do not directly fund unions or union activity, although important, we feel these serve different purposes and are already self-supporting.
